Now, in addition to people who want to chat online, single people who wish to meet other single people, do-it-at-home matchmakers who want to match their friends up with other friends, families who wish to stay in contact; business people who want to network with other business people, classmates and students looking for potential study partners, and anyone looking for long-lost friends, comedians also have a home on MySpace.com.

With over 100 million members and a new member sign-up rate of over 230,000 per day, MySpace.com has understandably become one of the most popular websites on the Internet.  In fact, it is the fourth most popular English-language website in the world and the third most popular website in the United States—visited even more than Google and ebay.  Comedians, imagine the potential audience you could find on MySpace.com, and, comedy lovers, your daily comedy fix can now be a lot easier to find.

MySpace.com recently added a comedy section to its line-up of social offerings. Sponsored by Sierra Mist, the goal of the new effort is to create revenue on the website, which makes all of its money from advertising.  While the Comedy Section includes content from MySpace.com users, it is not wholly user-generated.  Most of the content appears to be commercial or commercially sponsored content.

According to Pali Research’s Richard Greenfield, “Comedy also increases the use of viral video within MySpace as the comedy section is inherently linked into the ‘Videos’ section of Myspace. Comedy also increases the community aspect of MySpace, as users can add individual comedians…to their friends list and be alerted to live performances.”

You can access MySpace’s Comedy Section from the MySpace.com homepage. You need not be a member of MySpace to view the comedy content.  Once on the Comedy page, you will find the MySpace featured comedians, which features links to their MySpace personal profiles.   You’ll also find a Sketch Comedy section, which includes a featured comedian, where you’ll find upwards of 500 sketch comedy listings.  A line-up of featured videos is sure to entertain your funny bone.  Some are sneak previews of upcoming movie releases, while others are member-generated comedic videos.

MySpace.com presents Comedy Spotlights as well.  Here you can find different physical venues for catching good comedy.  Hot acts are listed here with their presentation dates, clubs, and cities.  Check it out for good live comedy finds.

The Improv Presents section of the webpage hosts pick-of-the-week improvisation recommendation.   In addition to reading a blurb about the week’s comedian, you will also find a link to his or her personal profile page.  There’s also an Improv Video Pick that you can watch for laughs.

You can also search for comedians and try your hand at cracking jokes in one of the MySpace.com comedy forums. While you can view the forum messages as a non-member, you will need to join up in order to post a funny or respond to someone else’s joke.  A list of top comedians and comedian gigs can also be found on the MySpace Comedy page.
